strategic guidance, technical expertise and an array of consulting services related to work redesign in disaster preparedness and emergency medical services, and emerging clinical decision support analyses.
Dr. Veenema served as senior consultant to the American Red Cross during Hurricane Katrina, and has served as consultant to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Veteran’s Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Commission on Children & Disasters. As the author of two books and the Award winning ReadyRN: Disaster Nursing and Emergency Preparedness (Elsevier | MC Strategies) and Red Cross ReadyRN- (National American Red Cross), Dr. Veenema’s work has prepared thousands of nurses for disaster response.
While at the University of Rochester Dr. Veenema designed and implemented the first master’s degree program for nurses and allied health professionals in the country that focused on “Leadership in Health Care Systems in Disaster Response and Emergency Preparedness”, recognized as a model of excellence in the Annual Review of Nursing Education (2006).
Dr. Veenema received a BSN from Columbia University in 1980; Master of Science degree in Administration in 1992, Post-Master’s degree in Pediatrics (Care of Children and Families) in 1993, and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1999. In 2001 she earned a Ph.D. in Health Services Research and Policy from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Dr. Veenema is a nationally Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and was recognized as a distinguished practitioner by her election into the National Academies of Practice in 2004. She was selected a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow (2004-2007)and as Senior Fellow in Nursing Policy & Philanthropy at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and at the Center for State Health Policy at Rutgers University (2008-2009). Dr. Veenema serves on the editorial board for the AMA sponsored Journal of Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness.
In November 2009 Dr. Veenema presented her work in clinical decision analysis for public health emergencies at the APHA Annual conference and was inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. In April 2010 Dr. Veenema was honored with the Distinguished Leadership Award from her alma mater Suffield Academy.
